BALTIMORE, Md. -- Three second-half goals opened up a scoreless contest as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team stumbled on the road, falling to UMBC, 3-1, in America East action.
The River Hawks (6-4-2, 1-2-0) dropped their third straight game, while the Retrievers (5-4-1, 1-2-0) picked up their first conference win of the season.
Ivan Blaskic (Zagreb, Croatia) put the visitors on the board in the 88th minute, on his first of the season.
The junior collected a pass at the corner of the net from
Stanley Alves (Minas Gerais, Brazil), who had his first shot saved and was the first to the rebound.
UMBC's Kyle Saunderson opened up the scoring on a header off a corner in the 48th minute, after neither team recorded a shot on target in the opening half.
UMass Lowell mounted counter attacks looking for the equalizer but
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) and
Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) had their attempts turned aside. Moments later,
Jannick Baumer (Germany) had his shot beat the keeper but connect with the crossbar to stay out of the net in the 58th minute.
After weathering the River Hawks' attempts, Matt Bailey scored goals in the 64rd and 66th minutes to seal the victory.
Following a two-game road swing, UMass Lowell returns home to take on Binghamton on October 13 at 4 p.m.
