River Hawks earn 3-0 road shutout at Miami in series opener

Tyler Wall amassed 36 saves in his fourth career shutout for the River Hawks on Friday

OXFORD, Ohio -- Junior goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) amassed 36 saves in his fourth career shutout to lead the UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 3-0 road victory at NCHC foe Miami on Friday night at the Goggin Ice Center in non-league play.

The River Hawks improve to 2-1 overall, while the RedHawks fall to a 3-2 overall record with the loss.

"It's a great effort, especially when you can grab two points and get a shutout on the road," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Those are special moments, I thought our team played well and a lot of people contributed."

Junior forward Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) sealed the win for the River Hawks with a shorthanded tally for his third of the season just 7:43 into the third period to extend the River Hawks lead to 3-0.

Senior co-captain Connor Wilson (Calgary, Alta.) tallied his second of the year on a nifty backhanded goal to make it a 2-0 game at 14:55 of the middle stanza.

Freshman forward Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.) opened the scoring in the game on the power play with his second collegiate goal at 17:40 of the opening frame. Knoblauch finished the game with a career-high two points (1g,1a), while Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ont.) posted his first collegiate point with an assist on Knoblauch's goal.

Wall recorded 15 saves in the final period, which included a point blank breakaway glove save on Karch Bachman with 19.4 seconds left in the second period. Miami's Jordan Uhelski stopped 19 shots in the losing effort.

Knoblauch and Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) each had a team-high four shots on goal in the victory.

The River Hawks finished the night a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

UMass Lowell returns to action in the series finale at Miami on Saturday, October 20th. Game time from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio is 7 p.m.
