LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell men's soccer team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win against Binghamton in America East action on Saturday evening.Â
Holding onto a 1-0 lead in the second half, the River Hawks (7-4-2, 2-2-0) scored two goals in a span of a minute to open up the advantage and seal the victory, improving to 5-1 at Cushing Field on the season.
Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) filled the score sheet with his second goal of the season and first assist to lead the offense for UMass Lowell.
The Bearcats entered the matchup ahead of the hosts in the conference standings, and fell to 3-8-2 with a 2-2-0 mark league play.
"I thought the guys came out focused to get that early goal and set the tone," commented Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "It was something we talked about all week and before the game, as setting the tempo always helps. It was important to keep the tempo going in the second half and getting those two quick goals midway through really changed things for us."
The hosts jumped ahead in the fourth minute on
Roko Prsa's (Zagreb, Croatia) fourth tally of the season, as he planted himself in the the six-yard box and easily sent his shot past the diving keeper after collecting the pass from the fellow Croatian Abramovic.
After the score, Binghamton was able to set up pressure and had opportunities of its own, but could not get any on target to test
Zach Rowell (Haverhill, Mass.) until the second half. Â
As the game entered the 62nd minute the River Hawks were able to take advantage of a pair of Binghamton miscues to add to the lead on the scoreboard. With the ball in the offensive end, Abramovic was able to force a turnover from the Bearcat keeper and deposit the loose ball into the net for his first goal since August.Â
Less than a minute later,
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) sent in a cross that got blocked right back to his feet and he one-timed the shot into the back of the net for the third and final goal of the contest.Â
The River Hawks out shot the visitors,13-12, and held a 6-2 advantage in attempts on target. Rowell calmly collected his two saves for his sixth win and fifth shutout of the season.
