LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated by RIT, 5-4 in overtime in the non-conference series finale on Saturday night in front of 4,925 fans at the Tsongas Center.
The River Hawks (1-1) and Tigers (1-1) split the series, after UMass Lowell earned a 2-1 win on opening night on Friday.
RIT's Alden Dupuis ended the game for the Tigers just 46 seconds into the extra frame to salvage the series split.
Freshman forward
Reid Stefanson (Winnipeg, Man.) knotted the game at 4-4 with 1:14 to play for his first collegiate goal as a River Hawk.
UMass Lowell battled back as junior forward
Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) added his second goal of the game to get the River Hawks to within a goal a 4-3 just 1:24 into the third period on the power play. It was the fourth career multi-goal game for Hausinger, the first since January 12, 2018 at Arizona State.
The Tigers scored four straight goals in the second period to make the score 4-2 at the end of the second stanza on goals by Jordan Peacock, two goals by Abbott Girduckis and a goal from Gabe Valenzuela.
The River Hawks scored twice to open the scoring in the game, just 32 seconds apart. Junior forward
Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) got the River Hawks' offense going at 17:19 and then freshman forward
Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.) added a goal to give UMass Lowell a 2-0 lead at the end of the first frame for his first collegiate tally.
Senior forward
Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) finished the night with a game-high five shots on net. Senior co-captain
Connor Wilson (Calgary, Alta.) and freshman forward
Seth Barton (Kelowna, B.C.) each had two assists in the contest, the points for Barton were the first of his collegiate career.
UMass Lowell went 2-for-7 on the power play, while RIT went 2-for-4 with the man advantage. The River Hawks owned a 42-30 shot advantage for the game, including an 18-6 edge in the third stanza.
UMass Lowell senior goaltender
Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) recorded 25 stops in his 28th career start with 11 saves in the second frame. RIT's Logan Drackett finished the game with 38 saves in the win, which included 16 stops in the third period alone.
The River Hawks return to action on Friday, October 19
th as the teams opens a two-game series at Miami (OH). Game time from the Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio is 7:30 p.m.
