LOWELL, Mass. – As part of the first phase of the UMass Lowell Athletics Leadership Development Series, over 90 River Hawk freshman student-athletes in the Class of 2022 spent the day serving the greater Lowell community on Monday afternoon.
Â
To kick off the day of service, Sean Guthrie, Principal at Young Achievers Science and Math Pilot School in Mattapan, former NFL player and Boston College graduate, greeted the freshman class with high energy and a positive attitude. He spoke to the student-athletes about the profound impact they can make while serving their community. Using his strong leadership style and group exercises, Guthrie left the student-athletes motivated to embark on their first servant leadership activity with a positive outlook on Columbus Day.
"Our student-athletes have a unique platform with which to effect positive change in the community," remarked Alison Quandt Westgate, UMass Lowell's Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Student-Athlete Services. "It's incredibly important that they understand the power of that platform and how they can use it early on in their River Hawk careers."
Â
In conjunction with the Servant Leadership phase, student-athletes went to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, Greater Lowell YMCA, Girls Inc. and assisted the city's Lowell Parks and Recreation Department in beautifying Father Maguire Park on Mammoth Road in Lowell.
Â
UMass Lowell's student-athletes lent a hand doing various projects at each of the sites, which included touching-up the interior of the Boys & Girls Club with a fresh coat of paint. While at the Greater Lowell YMCA and Girls Inc., students were mentoring and interacting with children, and played games such as kickball and making Halloween themed crafts.
Â
Another group of River Hawks rolled up their sleeves to help clean up Father Maguire Park just down the street from the university's North Campus. The student-athletes raked leaves, cleaned up trash on the park's grounds and dragged the baseball field to enhance the look and safety of the park.
Â
The UMass Lowell Athletics Leadership Development Series is a three-phase outreach program that will help student-athletes build on the positive relationships between the University and it's surrounding community.
Â
Year one of the program will begin with all freshmen student-athletes, with sophomores joining in year two and juniors being added to the series in 2020.
