LOWELL, Mass. – The No. 14 UMass Lowell (3-0-0) men's soccer team used a trio of second-half goals to win its third straight game, a 3-0 victory against Harvard (0-2-0) on Monday night, in front of a complex attendance record of 1,154.
"I thought it was a great performance by the guys, and I don't think the score reflects the type of team that Harvard is," remarked Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "They did a great job in the first half executing their game plan and limiting our opportunities, but our guys did a great job being patient and having the game open up."
Chase Reichenberg (Hamburg, Germany) broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season in the 52nd minute on a tap in off a rebound in the six-yard box.
Jakov Basic (Zagreb, Croatia) sent a free kick into the box, and
Ivan Blaskic (Zagreb, Croatia) had his shot saved but the rebound went right to Reichenberg.
A little over 10 minutes later,
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) converted his first career goal to double the River Hawk advantage to 2-0.
After a Crimson corner,
Alejandro Osorio (Hollywood, Fla.) led a breakout attack and sent a through ball from half to
Federico Ferre (Waltham, Mass.), the senior split defenders with a ball that found Jovanovski, and he sent the shot into the lower right corner.
The visitors had their best chances in the 78th minute in a sequence where Harvard recorded its first shot of the game and hit the post on back-to-back attempts.
Basic ended the scoring with a rip that slid right under the crossbar in the 90th minute, on a pass from
Duran Lee (Brampton, Ontario), for the senior's first career point in a River Hawk uniform. Reichenberg picked up the secondary assist and his career-high third point of the night.
In a scoreless first half, UMass Lowell outshot the Crimson, 4-3, with two shots on target to the visitors zero.
The River Hawks three best opportunities came in the final 15 minutes of the opening frame, first on a low strike by Jovanovski that was saved by Kyle Parks in the 31st minute and a free kick off
Ivan Abramovic's (Zagreb, Croatia) that struck the post in the 35th minute. Parks' recorded his second save of the half on a shot from
Richard Mulo (Kisumu, Kenya) in the 39th minute.
The night's attendance surpassed the mark of 1,071 set last year at a women's soccer game on September 1.
'The support we receive from the UMass Lowell and Lowell communities is great and it's amazing to see that many fans here in the crowd," concluded Figueroa.
UMass Lowell recorded 12 shots and nine on goal, while Harvard could only manage six shots and the one on goal.
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) recorded his 29th career win and 19th blank sheet, moving into third all-time.
The River Hawks are off until September 9 when they head to Boston for a 5 p.m. matinee at Northeastern.
