STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (3-4-3, 0-2-0 AE) fell 3-0 at Stony Brook (5-7-0, 1-1-0 AE) on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium. Junior captain
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped a season-high 10 shots in the loss.
"We created chances early and didn't finish them," commented Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "Individual mistakes cost us goals against their run of play. We strung together chances: [Shannon] Groffie got all of the cross bar, Abby [Drezek], Laura [Gagnon], and Rachel [Morrier] got in on the goal, but were just unable to finish it."
The River Hawks recorded the first shot of the game in the ninth minute with a bullet from senior
Shannon Groffie that just missed the back of the net and hit the crossbar.
The Seawolves would take the next four shots in the game, with two being on goal and one finding the back of the net off a shot from Fanny Gotesson that was placed in the bottom right corner and passed a diving keeper.
Senior captain
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) found space in front of the Stony Brook net early in the 18th minute that was saved by the keeper.
The Seawolves would race back to the other end later in the 18th minute and put a shot on goal where Schneider would make a diving save, but Alyssa Francese would find the rebound and put it in the back of the goal.
The River Hawks struggled keeping valuable possession the rest of the first as Schneider would have to make five more saves on seven shots.
The Seawolves wasted no time in the second half as they capitalized on a fast break opportunity with a shot from Julie Johnstonbaugh in the 48th minute.
The River Hawks held more meaningful possession in the second half with crisp passes, but were unable to finish the chances, registering just one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes.
Schneider would make her 10th save of the game with time running out in the second for a season-high.
The Seawolves held advantages in shots (19-3) and corner kicks (4-1), while Schneider would stop 10 shots and Sofia Manner stopped two.
UMass Lowell returns to action on Monday, October 2nd, for a matchup at Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
