BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell Volleyball team swept its two matches against NJIT (3-2) and Saint Peter's (3-0) in the final day of the Terrier Invitational hosted on the campus of St. Francis Brooklyn at the Genovesi Center.
The set scores in the early match were 18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-12. The set scores against Saint Peter's were 25-18, 25-6 and 25-16.
UMass Lowell improves to 3-3 overall with the two victories, while Saint Peter's drops to 0-8 overall and NJIT falls to 3-4 on the season.
In the late match, junior outside hitter
Haley Shimon (Des Moines, Iowa) recorded a match-high 11 kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) tallied 10 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomore setter
McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.) totaled 28 assists and four service aces running the River Hawk offense, while senior defensive specialist
Malorie McIver (Austin, Texas) and junior captain
Erica Cappellino (Penfield, N.Y.) each posted 10 digs apiece.
The team hit at a .393 clip in sets two and three to finish off the match.
In the early match vs. NJIT, the River Hawks won its first five set match of the season. Sophomore outside hitter
Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) notched a career-high 20 kills, a match-high .462 hitting percentage and eight digs, while Bova managed a career-high 46 assists to go along with nine digs. Bell was named to the Terrier Invitational All-Tournament Team with 33 kills in the three matches.
Shimon also chipped in with 17 kills, while senior outside hitter
Masha Yelsukova (Santa Clara, Calif.) finished the match with 11 kills and 10 digs. Freshman middle blocker
Ariel Dulaney (Bay Minette, Ala.) posted seven kills, a .238 hitting percentage, eight total blocks and four digs in the River Hawks second victory of the season.
Junior co-captain
Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) led the team with 19 digs, while McIver also added 11 digs. Cappellino also had a strong defensive effort with 10 digs. Â
UMass Lowell tallied a match-high 17 kills in the fourth set and hit at a .300 clip or better in the second (.360) and fifth (.300) frames.
The River Hawks return to the court on Friday, September 8
th in the opening match of the Creeds and Crests Classic against Houston Baptist (11am) hosted by Texas State at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas.
