LOWELL, Mass. – Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) notched the game-winning goal in the 87th minute as the No. 25 UMass Lowell men's soccer team (4-1-1) knocked off Monmouth (2-4-1), 3-2, on Saturday night.
Jakov Basic (Zagreb, Croatia) scored a career-high two scores as he has three goals in the last two contests.
After collecting a through ball from
Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia), Jovanovski had his original shot saved, but was able to knock the rebound home past Bobby Edwards.
"I thought the guys did a good job tonight of coming out and being strong, and obviously getting a few goals on the board is great, but giving up two is something we'll go look back at," commented Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "It was great to see the guys fight back after going up 2-0 and having Monmouth equalize. It was great to get that late goal and pick up the win."
Following Basic's two tallies, the Hawks scored two second-half goals over to erase a two-goal deficit and draw even with the hosts in the 64th minute.
Basic gave UMass Lowell a 1-0 lead on his second goal from 35 yards out in as many games, as his strike from
Joe Kellett (Norfolk, Mass.) and Gui Rodrigues (Lowell, Mass.) rifled past Monmouth's keeper in the 35th minute.
Basic added his second tally of the night in the 56th minute on a free kick from 20-yards out that he placed in the lower right corner.
The Hawks used a set piece goal of their own to cut the deficit in the 60th minute, when Jake Areman connected on his free kick from the same distance. Monmouth drew even five minutes later on a through ball that Anus Mrkulic gathered and suck under
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.).
Kroll made a pair of saves in his 30st career win, while Edwards made three saves in the losing effort.
The River Hawks begin a three-game road swing at Dartmouth on September 20, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
