LOWELL, Mass. – Senior midfielder
Andrea Morrow (West Boylston, Mass.) netted the game winner as time expired in the second overtime to give the River Hawks (1-0-2) their first win of the season against NJIT (0-3-0) on Sunday.
"We did well," commented Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "They didn't give up. It was literally last second and they dug down and kept going. It was our third overtime game so it can be tiring, but they just didn't quit. It was just fantastic all around."
The River Hawks would strike first at the 3:33 mark as senior midfielder
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) took the ball at midfield past two Highlander defenders, shooting from the left side curling the ball into the top right corner of the net and past the goalie's reach.
Freshman forward
Karah Fleet (Halifax, Nova Scotia) would get the next chance for the home squad 30 minutes in when a pass from the left side came into the box and found her feet for a point-blank shot that was saved by the legs of the Highlander keeper.
NJIT's Jennifer Callaghan took a shot at 60:47 mark from outside the box that curved right into the waiting hands of the River Hawk keeper.
At the 76:15 mark, NJIT's Carly Berdan dribbled the ball past the River Hawk defender and into the box and chipped it over the out-stretched reach of the keeper to even the score at one all.
Morrow received a pass from Morrier and took a shot on goal as time expired in the second overtime that ricocheted off the goalies diving punch out attempt and into the back of the net for the game winner. The goal was also the first goal of Morrow's collegiate career.
Junior goal keeper
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded four saves, while Karen David of NJIT's stopped three shots.
The Highlanders held a 16-14 shots advantage and an 8-1 corner kick advantage over the River Hawks.
UMass Lowell returns to action on Thursday, Aug. 31 when they travel to face the Colgate Raiders for a 5 p.m. start.
