HAMILTON, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Colgate on Thursday evening. Colgate's Emily Crichlow scored the game-winning goal with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
"They took it to us early, but we defended well and we played well enough in the last 25 minutes of the first half to get a goal," commented Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "They were better today and you have to give Colgate credit. We created enough opportunities to win tonight, we just need to finish our chances. I'm proud of what the team has done so far. I thought Rachel [Morrier] and Julia [Schneider] had great games today. The team continues to grow with each game of the season and we will only get better as we go. We will need some rest after two overtime games and with today's long trip, but I am happy with the effort the team showed."
The River Hawks played defense for a majority of the first half, but came alive late to even out the box score with great chances as the half expired.
Colgate's Emily Crichlow got the first chance of the game at the 13:47 mark, dribbling and sidestepping by River Hawk defenders to take a shot just outside the box and into the waiting hands of Schneider for the first save of the game.
Four minutes later, freshman
Kristin Birgisdottir (Mosfellbaer, Iceland) took a shot as she fell to the ground around a defender, but the Raider keeper made a diving save to keep the game tied at zero all.
The Raiders would get the next two chances, but each time, the junior captain was there to keep the River Hawks in the game and the Raiders off the board.
The final five minutes of the half showed the River Hawks get a flurry of chances late in the first, starting with a shot outside the box by junior
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) that went just wide.
Morrier would get another chance with five seconds remaining in the first half off a turnover in the box that found the captain's feet for a shot that was just high off the crossbar. The ball ricocheted back into the box to Birgisdottir's feet for a shot that went wide.
The Raiders maintained possession for most of the second with 16 shots and three corners in the half.
A flurry of chances for both sides throughout the second, but neither side was able to put one in the back of the net.
The Raiders would break through late when Crichlow headed in the game-winning goal from a corner past a sea of Raiders and River Hawks with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
Junior keeper
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped eight shots to Sophia Boggs' four.
The Raiders outshot the River Hawks 26-10 and tallied a 7-3 advantage in corners.
UMass Lowell returns to action when they play host to Sacred Heart on Sunday, Sept. 3 for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
