GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The UMass Lowell Volleyball team fell to host UNC-Greensboro in straight sets in its opening match of the Spartan Invitational on Friday night at Fleming  Gymnasium. The set scores 25-14, 25-20 and 25-16.Â
Sophomore outside hitter
Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) lead the team with eight kills in the losing effort. Junior middle blocker
Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) chipped in with six kills, while junior outside hitter
Haley Shimon (Des Moines, Iowa) registered five kills.Â
"Obviously we wanted a different result for our first match of the season, but it was a great experience to play a solid team in front of a lively crowd," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Resa Provanzano. "Overall, I was pleased with the effort and heart of our team and feel that if we can clean up our side of the net, particularly unforced errors, we will be happy with the result. We are excited to get back out there tomorrow and keep building on the lessons learned today."
Sophomore setter
McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.) totaled 18 assists running the River Hawk offense. Junior co-captain
Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.)Â led the way for the River Hawks on defense with a team-high 12 digs.Â
UMass Lowell posted a team-best 10 kills in the second frame.
Three River Hawk freshmen made their collegiate debuts in the match, including
Jessica Jubb (Millis, Mass.), who started the match, to go along with
Grace Burkett (Lakeside, Calif.) and
Ariel Dulaney (Bay Minette, Ala.)Â
The River Hawks are back in action in the final day of the Spartan Invitational with a 10:30 a.m. match against ACC foe Wake Forest and a 4:30 p.m. match against Morgan State.Â
