SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw, in their second consecutive game, against Bryant on Wednesday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper
Julia Schneider made six saves to complete her ninth career shutout.
"The game went well," explained Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "We dug down deep and got a result in a sense that we wanted to be very good defensively, and we were. We had plenty of chances late in the game. The kids are building character in another double over time game and they're digging down deep, so a team that's hard to play against. That's what we want to be is a team that's tough to play against and I think that we're starting to gain that reputation.
The River Hawks held strong in defense early in the first half fending off three Bulldog corners keeping the home team off the board.
Freshman forward
Karah Fleet registered the first shot on goal for either side, but she was unable to get strength behind her kick and the Bulldog goalie scooped up the shot.
The Bulldogs started to gain more rhythm towards the end of the first half, catching the River Hawks off guard for two shots just outside the box, but the junior captain was there to keep Bryant off the board.
UMass Lowell had more first half possession against Bryant, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The River Hawks got their first corner of the game in the second half, but the Bulldog defense was able to clear it.
The Bulldogs had a flurry of chances late in the second, but Schneider continued to be a brick wall in goal.
Sophomore midfielder
Olivia Crema found the ball at her feet just outside the box to begin the first overtime and put a rocket on goal that the Bulldog keeper just got a finger on to deflect the shot up into the crossbar.
In the second over time, two good chances for the River Hawks came late as good passing found the feet of junior midfielder
Rachel Morrier who put the shot that was blocked in the box.
Senior forward
Shannon Groffie had the next chance a few minutes later when the ball found her in the box and put a point blank shot on goal that was right to the stomach of the keeper who fell on the ball.
The River Hawks outshot the Bulldogs 15-14, but the home team had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
