LOWELL, Mass. – Five UMass Lowell student-athletes have been honored with the America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior distance runners
Jaclyn Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) and
Jennifer Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass.) of the women's cross country and track and field team, senior setter
Alexa Toth (Portland, Ore.) of the women's volleyball team, senior midfielder
Martin Winter (Lake Oswego, Ore.) of the men's lacrosse team and junior distance runner
Tyler Doveno (Nashua, N.H.) of the men's cross country and track and field team were this year's recipients representing UMass Lowell.
The award recognizes student-athletes who compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate student and graduated this spring. Of note, the 56 in 2017 honorees are a conference high since this program was started in 2014.
Solimine was named the winner of the University Scholar-Athlete award with her 3.88 GPA in mechanical engineering. Winter tallied the highest GPA among UMass Lowell student-athletes with a 4.00, while Pisark's 3.87 was third among her peers. Toth and Doveno rounded out the award winners, turning in a 3.77 and 3.76 GPA, respectively.
The Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award was approved by the America East Board of Presidents in June of 2013 and was implemented for the 2013-14 academic year. In total, 202 elite student-athletes have been honored as part of the program.
