HANOVER, N.H. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (15-12) picked up a non-conference win at Dartmouth, as the River Hawks recorded their seventh multi-home run game of the season to top the Big Green, 9-5, on Tuesday evening.
The game was suspended for 42 minutes in the bottom of the eighth inning after inclement weather moved in to the area.
After the delay,
Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) escaped a two-on, no out jam and
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) scored on an infield hit from
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) followed by an error to make it 9-5.
"You don't win a lot of games when you walk 11 guys, but it was good to see Ricky [Constant] pick up the win and contribute because if we want to do the things we want, we need him," commented
Ken Harring. "He took a step forward and our bats helped him with all the extra-base hits, which started with Colby's home run. We swung the bats up and down the lineup, and if we do that we'll be tough to beat."
The guests jumped out a 3-0 lead after their first at bats, capped by Maiola's second home run in as many games. The frame began with a leadoff walk by
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) and he quickly moved to second on wild pitch, then scored on a
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) single up the middle.
That set the stage for Maiola and on a 2-2 pitch he sent a shot over the wall in left to extend the buffer to 3-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Big Green got one run back and threated for more but Sharpe was able to limit the damage with his arm in center. With two on and no outs, he threw out a runner tagging to third for the double play, the River Hawks nearly converted a triple play but the runner just slid under the tag at second.
Sharpe got UMass Lowell its three-run advantage back in the top of the second with his 13th double, scoring
John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) all the way from first.
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) extended the lead to 5-1 with a RBI single in the fourth, after
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) lined a double off the wall in right.
Following a Dartmouth RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, Polichetti answered with his second hit of the day to send home
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) for the 6-2 lead. The Big Green responded with three straight runs, two in the sixth, to climb within 6-5 entering the eighth.
Climo responded right away with a leadoff homer in the top of the frame, and
Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) picked up a sacrifice fly to push the lead back up to 8-5.
Ricky Constant (Nashua, N.H.) struck out three and allowed two runs over five innings to earn his second victory of the season. Climo and Polichetti led the lineup with a combined five hits, four runs, and three RBI, with Polichetti recording a career-high three hits.
While the hosts left the bases loaded three times, four Dartmouth players each recorded one RBI and two hits, while Nate Ostmo and Trevor Johnson scored four of the Big Green's runs.
The River Hawks are back in action tomorrow at Massachusetts, with first pitch from Amherst scheduled for 3 p.m.
