LOWELL, Mass. – Career performances by sophomores
Rebecca Idson (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) and
Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.), along with an eight-goal second half propelled the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (1-2) to an 11-6 victory against Iona (2-3) for its first win of the year.
Â
Finelli matched program records in both assists (4) and points (5) in a single game, in addition to marking a career-high five points (1g, 4a), while Idson's career-best four goals tied a program record as well. The five goal differential marked the River Hawks largest margin of victory in program history.
Â
"We are happy to come away with that win," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros, "We did a lot of good things offensively that we have been trying to work on. Both teams made a lot of mistakes and it came down to who was able to capitalize on those mistake and we able to capitalize off Iona's. We were able to get a cushion in the second half but in tight games we can't make the same mistakes moving forward."
Â
Defense controlled the first half as Iona carried a slight, 4-3, lead at halftime. Sophomores
Kristina Keith (East Kingston, N.H.), Finelli and Idson all notched goals for the River Hawks who held a 13-11 edge in shots after 30 minutes of play.
Â
Iona drew blood first with an early goal at 28:19, before Keith tallied the equalizer nearly six minutes later making it 1-1 game. The Gaels later answered with back-to-back goals, producing their biggest lead of the game, 3-1. With under 10 minutes remaining, the two teams traded goals once again, before Idson rounded out the scoring with 43 seconds remaining to make it a 4-3 contest.
Â
Junior
Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the game to tie the game at 4-4 at 27:10 in the second, before Idson's second mark of the game gave the home team a 5-4 advantage and a lead they would fail to relinquish.
Â
The River Hawks' offensive continued to grind, as the team strung together seven consecutive tallies to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Idson tallied three of her four goals during UMass Lowell's 7-0 run before Iona's Jenna Tolzmann got the Gaels on the board for the first time in the final half.
Â
Iona outscored the River Hawks, 2-1, in the final five minutes of regulation but it was too late as UMass Lowell's five goal cushion secured the 11-6 win.
Â
Junior
Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) and sophomore
Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) played a part the second half comeback, netting one and two goals, respectively. Overall, UMass Lowell was aided by seven different points scorers, including four multi-pointer scorers.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) denied seven saves in the outing, while her counterpart recorded eight saves herself. Three River Hawks led the team with two caused turnovers.
Â
UMass Lowell is back in action on Wednesday, March 8 when they hit the road for a 3:00 p.m. quarrel at Army.
