CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, as the UMass Lowell softball team (7-13) was handed a 3-1, non-conference loss at Boston College (18-12) on Thursday afternoon.

"We got on the board early, but then they answered right back," said Head Coach Danielle Henderson. "We let them get too many free bases, and that gave them the opportunity to score, and they took advantage of that. We were threatening in the last inning, though, so hopefully we use that heading into conference play this weekend, and we get runners on, we'll be able to push them through."

Four other River Hawks added one hit apiece in the outing, including junior Madison Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.), who registered the team's only RBI.

T. Alcorn led off the game with a base hit to shortstop and added a single to shallow left in the third, but she would be the lone baserunner for either side through the first three innings, as the pitchers dominated from the circle and the cold temperatures helped limit contact to groundouts and popups.

The River Hawks were able to break the scoreless tie and get on the board in the top of the fourth, as sophomore Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) sparked a two-out rally with a liner down the left field line. Junior Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) was hit on the next pitch to bring up M. Alcorn, who roped a single to left to drive in the first run of the day.

The lead was short-lived, though, as BC responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning, including a RBI single by Jordan Chimento.

T. Alcorn found a hole in the right side during the River Hawks' at-bat in the fifth, but the Eagles used back-to-back plays at second base to extinguish any opportunity to cut into the buffer.

The River Hawks threatened once more in the seventh when senior Emily O'Brien (Salem, N.H.) sent a hard hit ball up the middle and redshirt-freshman Casey Harding (Cheshire, Conn.) followed with an infield single. However, BC's relief pitcher Kendra Friedt forced outs by the next two batters to pick up the save and seal the 3-1 decision.

The River Hawks will return to action on Saturday, April 1 when they travel to Hartford to kick off America East play with a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
