LOWELL, Mass. – Following a split in its America East-opening series against Binghamton over the weekend, the UMass Lowell baseball team heads out for two road mid-week contests before coming home to host the Maine Black Bears in a three-game set on April 1-2.
River Hawk Rewind
The River Hawks took on Binghamton in an abbreviated conference series, splitting Saturday's doubleheader with a 5-2 win the second game. The Bearcats took game one 1-0 on a solo shot in the eighth inning, as their pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout.
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) only allowed two hits and walked one in eight innings, striking out four. In the second game, UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead in the fifth and added four more runs to open a 5-0 lead heading into the final inning.
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) had the key hit with a two-run double in the four-run frame, and
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) had three hits on the day and scored twice in the win.
Collin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, picking up his third win on the season.
Leading the Flock
Sharpe paces the UMass Lowell offense with a .373 average, 28 hits, 22 runs, six long balls and 62 total bases. The sophomore has also doubled 10 times and has three triples with a .827 slugging percentage, while Maiola leads the team with 18 RBI. The trio of

Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) and Maiola have combined for 61 hits, 38 RBI, 39 runs and five home runs, as well. On the hill, Duffley leads the team with his three wins, while
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has a team-high four saves. Duffley leads the staff with 34 strikeouts and a 2.15 ERA, as well. As a team, the River Hawks are batting .263 and the staff is posting a 4.68 ERA.
Scouting Central Connecticut
The Blue Devils (10-10) snapped a three-game skid with a 2-1 win against Sacred Heart on March 26, and have won four of their last seven. The offense is led by Dean Lockey's .356 average, and Ryan Costello's four home runs with 18 RBI. The pitching staff is led by Jared Gallagher's 0.73 ERA, while a pair of arms have two wins apiece and Andrew Hinckley has stuck out 28 batters. As a team, CCSU is batting .246 and has a staff ERA of 4.20.
Scouting Marist
The Red Foxes (11-8) took two from Iona over the weekend and travel to Stony Brook on Tuesday before hosting the River Hawks on Wednesday. Tyle Kapuscinski paces the attack with a .309 average and 21 hits, along with 20 runs scored. Frankie Gregoire provides the power with his five homers and has produced 18 RBI. On the mound, Charlie Jerla has a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 innings, while Sean Keenan is 3-0 with one save in 32.2 IP. Keenan and Scott Boches are tied for the team lead with 32 strikeouts on the season. As a unit, Marist is batting .233 and the pitchers have a 3.74 combined ERA.
Scouting Maine
The Black Bears (6-13) are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak after dropping three games to St. John's over the weekend, getting outscored 27-4 in the series. Christopher Bec owns the team's best batting average with a .367, while his 29 hits and nine RBI rank atop the lineup as well. Tyler Schwanz has connected on two of Maine's five home runs so far this season. The pitchers are paced by Cody Laweryson's 1.93 ERA and Justin Courtney's two wins and 26 strikeouts. Jeff Gelinas has closed out three wins and has not allowed a run in 7.2 IP. The Black Bears are batting .239 and have a staff ERA of 5.14.
Series History
The River Hawks a 4-3 all-time against CCSU, but the teams have not played since 2014, a 4-3 decision in favor of the Blue Devils. Last season, the Red Foxes evened the series at 1-1, while Maine took a 7-2 lead in the all-time series with a three-game sweep.

Chris Sharpe has hit the fourth most home runs in the country, and ranks seventh with a .827 slugging percentage. The outfielder has recorded eight multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games.

Through 18 games, this year's offense has connected on 19 home runs and have delivered multiple home runs in five games, including a DI program-high four on February 25 against FDU. Last season, the River Hawks hit 23 homers with four multi-home run games.

Hangin' 11
The 11 runs against UConn marked the second consecutive season-opening win that the River Hawks crossed the plate 11 times. Last season, UMass Lowell defeated Nicholls State, 11-2, to begin 2016 1-0. It also marks the third time in DI that the River Hawks scored more than 10 runs in their first win of the season (14, vs. Temple, 2014).
