NEWARK, Del. – The UMass Lowell (7-6) baseball team held on for its third straight win and snapped the Delaware Blue Hens' (8-7) six-game winning streak with a 6-5 victory on Monday afternoon.
Â
"This was a great team win," commented Head Coach
Ken Harring. "The guys stepped up when they needed to and
Nick Kuzia (Seymour, Conn.) pitched a strong game to pick up the win. Our bullpen was dominant and got momentum back in our favor. I'm proud of the fight the guys have showed over the last couple days to put three solid wins together."
For the third consecutive game, the River Hawks scored in their first at-bats, as
Austin Young (Millbury, Mass.) singled home
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) after the sophomore doubled to lead off the game.
Â
UMass Lowell added three more runs in the second inning, sparked by
Cam Climo's (Billerica, Mass.) solo shot to begin the frame. The visitors loaded the bases behind back-to-back singles from
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) and
John Polichetti (Atkinson, N.H.) and a Sharpe walk. Marchena walked to score Olive, and
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 advantage.
Â
The Blue Hen defense committed two errors in the top of the fourth that led directly to a pair of River Hawk runs, extending the lead to 6-1. With one out, Sharpe and
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) successfully attempted a double steal, with Prada swiping third and scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.
Â
Later in the frame, Young reached on an error by the shortstop which allowed to Sharpe to score from second.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Delaware clawed back for two runs from Bobby Mohollen's double to left field. The hosts later had runners on second and third, but Kuzia was able to get the final out. The Blue Hens scored twice in the fifth on a pair of singles, but
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) threw out the tying run at the plate.
Â
After Kuzia (1-2) went five innings,
Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) pitched three shutout innings and struck out two, setting up
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) for his third save of the season.
Â
Sharpe continued to lead the offense going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Â
With the storm predicted for the Northeast, the River Hawks will wait and see when their next contest will be.Â
