Box Score | Harris Interview | Highlights
LOWELL, Mass. – Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) scored a career-high 16 points, but the UMass Lowell (3-21, 0-11) women's basketball team couldn't keep pace with the Stony Brook Seawolves (10-14, 3-8), and fell 86-44 at Costello Athletic Center on Monday night.
"I thought we did some nice things in the first quarter but we weren't able to sustain that, and the turnovers were a problem for us," said Head Coach
Jenerrie Harris. "I really liked what Oda was able to do when she came out on the floor, she was efficient when we were getting her the ball. Credit to Stony Brook as they capitalized on every mistake that we had."
The Seawolves ran out to an early 7-2 lead, but a
Markayla Sherman (Cincinnati, Ohio) jumper and
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) three-point play brought the River Hawks even, 7-7, with 7:02 on the clock. After
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) completed the 7-0 run to give UMass Lowell a 9-7 advantage, Stony Brook scored the next 10 to go up 17-9 with 2:36 left in the period.
Stony Brook opened the second quarter with seven consecutive points to build a 27-13 buffer just over two minutes into the frame.
Nicole Hayner (Bedford, N.H.) ended the drought and scored four of the next six River Hawk points. Behind six points in the period by Kori Bayne-Walker, the visitors outscored UMass Lowell 18-7, to take a 38-20 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Shackelford scored six of UMass Lowell's 16 points to crack double figures and tie her career high with 13 points. With a fade away jumper in the final minute, Shackelford set a new personal best on 6-of-9 shooting.
Davion Wingate led all scorers with 21 points to lead four Seawolves' in double-digits, and Kori Bayne-Walker dished a game-high six assists.
For the first time since joining Division I, the River Hawks were not able to complete a three-point shot.
UMass Lowell heads back on the road to take on the Maine Black Bears on February 9 in Bangor at 7 p.m.
