BANGOR, Maine – Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored a career-high 13 points, but the UMass Lowell (3-22, 0-12) women's basketball team suffered a 80-50 setback to the Maine Black Bears (14-13, 7-5) on Thursday night.
Smith scored her points in bunches, getting six in quarters two and three in a six minute span.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) added 13 as well.
Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) came up one point short of her first double-double, finishing with a career-high 10 rebounds.
The hosts were led by Sigi Koizar's 16 and Anita Kelava's 14 points. Koizar recorded five steals and five assists, as well.
Gibbs put the River Hawks in front, 2-0, with the first basket of the night, but after a Maine 10-2 run the Black Bears took a 10-4 lead with 5:45 left in the first quarter. Led by five points from Gibbs, including a conventional three-point play, UMass Lowell scored the next seven points to go back in front, 11-10, a minute and a half later.
Maine regained momentum and ended the opening period with a 10-2 run and entered the second quarter with a 20-13 lead. The Black Bears connected on three triples in the second, and went on a 16-2 run in the final 5:02 of the half to open a 45-23 buffer.
The River Hawks trailed 29-21 after Smith scored six points in the first five minutes of the period, but the hosts were able to pull away. Gibbs and Smith led UMass Lowell at the break with seven and six points, respectively.
Markayla Sherman (Cincinnati, Ohio) knocked down the River Hawks' first three of the game early in the third period. Smith added six points over one minute in the third to set her new personal best.
UMass Lowell is back at the Tsongas Center on February 12 to host the Hartford Hawks at 2 p.m.
