HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite
Kayla Gibbs' (Teaneck, N.J.) fifth consecutive double-double, the UMass Lowell women's basketball team dropped a non-conference tilt, 84-64, at Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
Gibbs led a group of four River Hawks (2-6) in double-figures with her 12 point, 13 rebound performance, both game highs. The trio of
Jennifer Louro (Belmar, N.J.),
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) and
Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) all added 10 points apiece.
UMass Lowell took an early 4-2 lead but saw the Raiders (4-4) build up a 16-0 run to take an 18-4 lead with 2:42 on the clock. With time winding down, Hendrick scored five consecutive points, including a half court buzzer beater to trim the deficit to 23-13 heading into the second.
Colgate extended the lead to 48-26 before the half, but back-to-back baskets by Shackelford and Louro trimmed the deficit to 48-30 t the intermission.
Louro and
Brianna Rudolph (Lynn, Mass.) connected on back-to-back threes to open the third and cut the deficit to 48-36. The baskets capped a 10-0 run for the River Hawks that started in the first half.
The visitors worked the hole back down to eight points, 50-42, with 5:34 left in the half, but a 11-0 run for the Raiders regained momentum for the hosts.
Colgate was led by 10 points apiece from Tori Pozsonyi, Rachel Thompson and Mylah Chandler.
UMass Lowell heads to New Jersey next week for a pair of games in the Garden State, beginning with a matchup at Saint Peter's on December 7.
