LUBBOCK, Texas – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team suffered a 93-65 setback against Teas Tech in the team's final game before the Thanksgiving break on Wednesday afternoon.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) paced the River Hawks (1-4) with her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Saoirse Power-Cassidy (Dublin, Ireland) set a new season high as she dropped in a pair of threes to finish with 11 points.
The Lady Raiders (3-1) had two players record double-doubles as Brielle Blaire (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Jada Terry (10 points 10 rebounds) combined for 21 of Tech's 55 boards. Brittany Brewer scored a game-high 25 points, while Recee' Caldwell dished out 10 assists.
Both teams traded baskets in the early minutes as UMass Lowell trailed 5-4 after the first two and a half minutes. The Lady Raiders responded to build 21-10 advantage in the opening frame and led 23-15 after the first quarter.
With 8:25 left in the first half,
Linda Svenne (Riga, Latvia) and
Cierra Stanciel (Chicago, ill.) provided a 5-0 spurt for the River Hawks run to cut deficit to 28-20.
After a few empty trips for the visitors with a chance to trim the contest to a two-possession game, the Lady Raiders closed the half on a 20-8 run to enter the intermission with a 48-26 lead.
Svenne, Gibbs and Stanciel led the River Hawks with six points at the break, and Gibbs became the first visitor to reach double digits with 6:44 on the clock in the third.
The senior from Teaneck, N.J. picked up the double-double with her 10th rebound in the fourth quarter, as the River Hawks generated a 12-5 run in final frame.
Power-Cassidy bookmarked the end of the third and beginning of the fourth with a pair of threes, and added her final later in the frame as the visitors outscored the hosts, 24-20, in the last period.
UMass Lowell returns to Costello after the Thanksgiving break with a contest against Fisher College on November 27 on 7 p.m.
