River Hawks Defeat Vermont, 4-3, in Double Overtime on Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) logged a season-high two goals, including the game-winner in double overtime to lift the UMass Lowell field hockey team (9-10, 3-5 AE) to a 4-3 victory against America East foe Vermont (5-12, 1-7 AE) on Senior Day.

With this decision in the regular-season finale, the River Hawks have set a new Division I program record with nine wins so far this year.

The River Hawks outshot the Catamounts, 8-4, in overtime. Doiron's deciding goal came in the 95th minute of play when she sent home a rebound following an initial shot from classmate Kelly Mankowich (East Windsor, N.J.).

"We battled today for sure," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "Vermont plays a difficult style of hockey. They're fast and furious, and they run right at you. It took us a little while to maintain possession and get something going, but I like how we battled back. Winning on Senior Day is always something that you hope for, especially for this senior class, who has been terrific."

Junior Brooke Roberts (Medway, Mass.) and sophomore Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) each added one goal for the River Hawks, while senior goalkeeper Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.) totaled three saves to earn the decision in the cage.

Although Vermont took an early lead in just the eighth minute of action, UMass Lowell was quick to retaliate with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart. Lalande first knotted the score at 1-1 from the right post on a corner opportunity, redirecting a pass from freshman Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium). Then on the next possession, Doiron finished off a cross from Lalande to give the home squad a 2-1 edge in the 12th minute.

Vermont pressured coming out of halftime with the first six shots of the second, including a tip in off the stick of Tess O'Brien to force a 2-2 tie in the 45th minute. The visitors were able to regain the upper hand eight minutes later on another corner attempt, this time when Warren posted up on the right side and deflected a slow roller over the goal line.

Coming out of a late timeout, the River Hawks would find the equalizer in unique fashion with Roberts batting a reverse chip shot from freshman Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) over the UVM keeper and down into the cage, sending the game into a sudden-victory overtime.

Sunday's contest marked the 18th meeting between UMass Lowell and Vermont in the sport of field hockey. Vermont still owns an 11-6-1 edge in the all-time series.

The River Hawks have clinched the No. 4 seed in the East Division for the AE Championship and will square off against No. 1 Stanford for the second consecutive year. That quarterfinal rematch is slated for Thursday, November 2 at 3:30 p.m. at Wicked Blue Field.
