River Hawks Play to 1-1 Draw Against Binghamton on Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Binghamton at Cushing Field as the team honored eight seniors before the game. The draw moved the River Hawks record to 5-5-5 overall and 2-2-2 in America East Play, while the Bearcats moved to 9-3-4 overall and 3-2-1 in league play.

"That's a good team," said Women's Soccer Head Coach Francesco D'Agostino. "They're tough to play against. You still feel like you're on the wrong end of a tie, but that's a good thing though to be able to play against a team that well and be able to come out with points. Emily [Duchesne] did a great job on defending their star striker, which shows her improvement as a center back."

The River Hawks honored eight seniors prior to the contest: Emily Duchesne (Hooksett, N.H.), Laura Gagnon (Millville, Mass.), Shannon Groffie (Toms River, N.J.), Alex Guzman (Las Vegas, Nev.), Andrea Morrow (West Boylston, Mass.), Sinead O'Callaghan (Braintree, Mass.), Thalia Petsis (Toronto, Ontario), and Megan Rauseo (Methuen, Mass.).

Redshirt junior captain Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) scored the only River Hawk goal, while junior keeper Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped eight shots in the contest.

Binghamton's Kayla Saager wasted no time starting off the game with a shot that was saved by Scneider in the opening minute.

A corner kick in the 25th minute taken by Groffie found teh opposite side of the net, but freshman Giulia Rabbito was taken down inside the box trying to retrieve it and teh referee awarded a penalty kick to the home team. Morrier stepped up to the ball and placed a beautiful shot in the bottom left of the goal.

Morrier found herself on a breakaway in the 44th minute being bodied by a defender, but she was still able to get a shot off from the middle that sailed just over the crossbar.

With two saves at the half from Schneider, the River Hawks held Binghamton Scoreless in the opening 45 minutes of play, the 12th time they have accomplished that feat the season.

Saager would again waste no time at the start of the second half, sending a shot in the 47th minute towards Schneider, who corralled it for her third save.

Freshman Kristin Birgisdottir (Mofsfellsbaer, Iceland) broke away on a pass from the middle in the 49th minute and took a shot with a defender on her, but it was right to the Binghamton keeper.

Binghamton was awarded a free kick in the 79th minute and Saager stepped up to take the shot. Her shot found the crossbar, just over the reach of Schneider, and bounced down past the goal line to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 96th minute, Gagnon chipped a shot high in the air 25 yards out from that kept drifting and sinking, finding it's way to the top right corner that the Bearcat keeper had to dive to punch out.

Schneider stopped three shots in the second overtime to keep the game tied and walk away with a point.

The draw moved the River Hawks home record to 4-1-3 on the season which is the first winning record at Cushing since joining the Division I ranks.

The draw in the sixth overtime this season for the River Hawks improved their overtime record to 1-0-5 on the season.

Binghamton held an advantage in shots (24-11) and corners (9-5) over UMass Lowell.

Schneider finished with eight saves, while Binghamton's Mackenzie Hanna stopped seven in the draw.

The River Hawks return to action on Thursday, October 19 when they travel to New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
