BURLINGTON, Va. – Five different River Hawks tallied points on Friday, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (8-7, 2-2 AE) defeated America East Conference foe Vermont, 4-2, on the road.

"This was a great conference win for us on the road," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "The team showed tremendous poise through a tough battle with a gritty Vermont team. Our attack really did their job today, and took what we worked on in practice all week and applied it. As a coaching staff, we are always happy to see progress."

As a team, the River Hawks took a slight, 14-12, lead in shots in the outing, along with a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) totaled five saves in the complete-game decision.

In a game that was even through over 20 minutes of back-and-forth action, UMass Lowell broke open the scoring in the 24th minute when junior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) sent home a deflection from sophomore teammate Brooke Roberts (Medway, Mass.). The visitors would then extended their margin to 2-0 just before the break, as sophomore Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) finished off a rebound in front of the cage.

Coming out of halftime, the River Hawks quickly made the score, 3-0, thanks to a ball from freshman Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) on the penalty corner in the 39th minute. Following another 15 minutes of game action, the team tallied their final goal of the day, this time from freshman Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) on a penalty stroke, but the Catamounts were able to battle back.

Vermont got on the board in the 55th minute with Landon Warren's 11th goal of the 2017 season. Just under 10 minutes later, the home team cut the deficit in half, making the score 4-2, as Lauren Tucker converted on a direct corner with assists from Olivia Hurd and Rachel Phillips. However, UMass Lowell was able to hold on in the final six minutes to seal the victory.

Friday's contest marked the 17th meeting between UMass Lowell and Vermont in the sport of field hockey. The Catamounts still own an 11-5-1 edge all-time. The River Hawks now return home to host No. 20 UAlbany on Sunday, October 15 in a 2 p.m. contest on Alumni Day.
