LOWELL, Mass. --
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) scored twice for the third straight game to propel the River Hawks to a 2-0 shutout win over UMBC (2-9-3, 0-5-0 AE). Fellow junior captain
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped nine shots to improve the squad's goal to 5-5-4 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.
"It was an important win," explained Women's Soccer Head Coach
Francesco D'Agostino. "We needed the win and we needed the points. It kept us alive for a playoff spot, so we're happy. Rachel [Morrier] got the ball in the right spots again and was able to put two away. Kristin [Birgisdottir] had a great, great game. All around the board, the squad closed out a game."
Morrier wasted no time picking up right were she left off after her four goal performance last week, opening the scoring in the 12th minute off a rebound inside the box from a cross from senior
Shannon Groffie (Toms River, N.J.).
In the 23rd minute, the Retreivers would get their best chance of the first half off a shot by Jessica Hopkins, but Schneider was there to make the save and keep the home team on top.
15 minutes later, freshman
Veronica Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) took a pass past the UMBC defenders and took a shot from the right side of the box that was past the keeper, but just wide of the night.
Schneider two saves in the opening 45 minutes to extend the River Hawks Division I record to 11 games not allowing a goal in the first half.
Jessica Hopkins would again get two quick chances coming out of the second half, taking shots two minutes apart from each other that Schneider was able to stop before they found their way into the back of the net.
In the 51st minute, the River Hawks would take a 2-0 lead when freshman
Kristin Birgisdottir (Mofsfellsbaer, Iceland) snuck a ball past two defenders and at the feet of a streaking Morrier who was challenged by the UMBC keeper, but was able to take a shot that was just under the arm of the keeper and into the bottom left side of the net.
The Retrievers and River Hawks would trade chances the remainder of the game, with Schneider making two saves and the defense fending off five corners in the final 15 minutes of the contest.
UMBC finished with a 15-10 shot advantage and a 10-3 advantage in corners.
Schneider stopped nine shots in the win, while UMBC keeper Leah Roth stopped four.
The River Hawks return to action on Sunday, October 15 when they host Binghamton at 4:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
