COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team was bested, 1-0, at Colorado College Friday night, in game one of a two-game road stint.
Â
The River Hawks fall to 2-3-2 overall, while the Tigers jump to 4-3-0 this fall.
Â
"Colorado College is without a doubt the most complete program we've played this year," said Head Coach
Joel Bancroft. " We entered the match with a specific style of play and I felt we really caused them problems early on. They struggled to break us down. As they made adjustments the game swung back to them however we were able to change once more and again have more than our share of the game."
One goal was all that was needed, as the home team extended their win streak to two, thanks to Colorado College forward Dana Gornick who posted the lone goal of the night.
Â
"There are moments within a game that you execute or you do not, explained Bancroft. "Both teams found those moments and credit to Colorado College for doing a better job of finishing. It was the difference in the match. It's no secret that we seek out bigger programs with rich traditions to test us every year. We once more have the toughest strength of schedule in our conference. We feel these tests prepare us best for conference play."
In the first half of action, goalkeeper
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) led the way for the defensive unit, while racking up three saves in net. The River Hawks posted two shots on goal, including their best chance of the match coming off the foot of forward
Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.), early in the 14th minute.
Â
The following 28 minutes remained scoreless until Gornick tallied the game winner for the Tigers in the 74th minute. After receiving a pass from forward Tanner Haughn at the top of the box, Gornick drove a shot top self to record her second goal of the season.
Â
Offensively for the River Hawks, Vieira and midfielder
Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) placed the only shots on goal for their squad, who were outshot by a total of 13-6 in the contest.
Â
Schneider totaled four saves in the tilt as she falls to 1-3-1 in 2016, while her counterpart recorded three saves, improving to 3-2-0 overall.
Â
"We took a step forward in out attacking personality while still not making any concessions defensively. I'm very proud of my team and we look to recover and prepare for a very good Air Force program on Sunday."Â
UMass Lowell is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 18 for an afternoon showdown at Air Force, slated to begin at 2 p.m.Â
