LOWELL, Mass. – After coming back from a 6-0 deficit, the UMass Lowell (17-26, 5-16) baseball team fell in extra innings, 7-6, to the UMBC Retrievers (23-20, 11-9) on Senior Day at LeLacheur Park on Sunday afternoon.
Before the game,
Kevin Veilleux (Manchester, Mass.) and
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) were honored for their careers as River Hawks.
"We put ourselves in a big hole going down 6-0 after three innings," said Head Coach
Ken Harring. "Nick just didn't have it today; they didn't hit the ball hard but took advantage with men in scoring position. I gotta give my guys credit, putting on a four spot in the fourth to get us going, and Consolmagno's home run get us within one. There's no quit in these guys and there never will be, they fought the whole time and UMBC just had our number."
With the bases loaded in the 10th, Nick Naumann hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right field to score AJ Wright and put the Retrievers ahead for good. The River Hawks forced extras when
Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch with one outs in the ninth.
The guests scored five runs in the first, capped off with a three-run triple off the bat of Wright. The Retrievers added one more in the fourth, when Wright doubled home his fourth RBI of the game.
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) got three back on one swing of the bat in the sixth with a triple to the wall in right center. With one out in the frame,
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) and
Andy Savard (Tyngsboro, Mass.) sandwiched walks around a
Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) single to load the bases for Tumosa.
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) singled home the freshman to put four on the board in the inning.
Consolmagno capped off his senior day with a solo shot over the wall in right to cut the deficit to 6-5 in the seventh inning.
Marchena, playing his sixth game at third this season, came within one assist of tying the school record with 10, including four straight at one point. In relief,
Kendall Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
The trio of Sharpe, Consolmagno and Passatempo all had multi-hit games for the River Hawks, while Andrew Casali and Wright combined for seven UMBC hits and five RBI.
UMass Lowell returns to LeLacheur on Tuesday for a non-conference night tilt with Northeastern at 7 p.m.
