LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team fell to No. 9 ranked Albany, 16-9 in America East play on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex.
With the loss, the River Hawks fall to 2-9 overall (0-3 AE), while Albany improves to 7-2 overall and 3-0 America East games.
The Great Danes struck twice to open the game on goals by Seth Oakes and John Maloney, but freshman attackman
Blaine McMahon (New Milford, Conn.) made it a 2-1 game just four minutes into in the opening quarter. Albany scored twice after the McMahon goal on goals by Kevin McNally and Justin Zelen to make it a 4-1 contest with just 2:28 left in the first quarter. Kyle McClancy capped off the scoring for the Great Danes with three seconds remaining to give Albany a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Freshman attackman
Ryan Morrison (Uxbridge, Ont.) notched his first career goal for the River Hawks with 13:39 left in the second quarter to cut the Albany lead to 6-2.
Bennett Drake opened the scoring in the third quarter at 12:32, while sophomore attackman
Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alberta) notched his 18
th goal of the season cut the Great Danes lead to 8-3. After the Tyrrell goal, Albany then ripped off seven unanswered goals to end the third quarter with the Great Danes holding a 15-3 advantage.
The River Hawks came out firing in the fourth quarter with five straight goals by
Martin Winter (Lake Oswego, Ore.) at 13:03 and 8:28, a tally by
Matthew Balter (10:01), McMahon (7:11) and
Kyle Strong (4:24) to make it a 15-8 game in favor for the Great Danes. McMahon and Winter finished the day with two goals apiece for the River Hawks.
Connor Fields finished the day with a game-high five points (4g,1a) for Albany.
Freshman goalie
Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) made seven saves on 20 shots in his 11
th start of the season.
Giles Ober came in the game in relief of Lardieri stopping three of five shots. Senior Blaze Riordan notched seven stops in the Albany net, while sophomore goalie Trevor Cross allowed six goals on nine shots by UMass Lowell.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 9
th at Binghamton. Game time is 1 p.m. from Vestal, N.Y. at the Bearcats Sports Complex for America East action.
