CLEARWATER, Fla. - Freshman Sydney Wash (Suffolk, Va.) recorded a season-high six strikeouts in the circle for the UMass Lowell softball team (4-19) in the squad's final tournament game of 2016, a 3-0 loss against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (17-15) on Sunday.

"Being down here and playing all these games, we've experienced a lot," said Head Coach Danielle Henderson. "I hope we take that with us, learn from it, and use it get better heading into the America East next weekend."

Wash turned in a complete-game performance to move to 2-6 on the year. Junior Tori Alcorn (Lowell, Mass.) finished the contest with one hit (.500) and one walk, while sophomore Vanessa Cooper (Pleasant Gap, Pa.) added a hit, as well.

The defense controlled the early innings, as UMass Lowell and Chattanooga combined for just three runners left on base through the first two frames. During that stretch, Wash fanned four straight Mocs to keep the game scoreless.

T. Alcorn logged the River Hawks' first hit of the day in the top of the third, but the squad was unable to capitalize. The Mocs then broke the game open with three runs in the home half of the inning with the help of a RBI single and a two-run triple.

Both sides went three-up and three-down in the fourth, and although Cooper led off the fifth with a liner to center, the Mocs maintained their 3-0 edge. UMass Lowell would not scratch a run across in its final at-bats, sealing the outcome for Chattanooga.

The River Hawks head back north and have a quick turnaround, visiting Holy Cross for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 22 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
