Kevin Boyle tabbed as Hockey East Co-Player of the Year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) of the UMass Lowell Hockey team was named Hockey East Co-Player of the Year at the annual league awards banquet on Thursday night at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.
 
Boyle, who was selected as a Second-Team Hockey East All-Star, is the first player in league history to win Player of the Year honors as a Second-Team selection. He shared league Player of the Year honors with Boston College's Thatcher Demko, who was a First-Team All-Star selection.
 
In Hockey East play, Boyle recorded a 12-6-4 record with a 1.62 GAA and a .941 save percentage to go along with four shutouts. He was crowned the Hockey East Goaltending Champion with the best GAA and save percentage among Hockey East netminders.
 
Boyle has tallied a 22-8-5 overall record this season with a 1.80 GAA and a .934 save percentage. His seven shutouts this season is a new school record, previously held by Connor Hellebuyck and Cam McCormick. Boyle's 1.80 GAA is fourth best in the nation, while his .934 save percentage his tied for sixth in the country along the Providence's Nick Ellis. His seven shutouts are tied for second in the nation and his 22 wins ranks sixth in the country. He has been named No. 1 Star of the Game 10 times this season and was a four-time recipient of the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week Award.
 
He was named one of five finalists for the prestigious Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goaltender in college hockey.
 
Boyle is the second player in team history to win the award and is the first since goaltender Dwayne Roloson in 1994.
 
The No. 4 seeded UMass Lowell Hockey team will face No. 2 seed Providence College in the Hockey East semifinals at the TD Garden on Friday, March 18th at 5 p.m. in Boston. This will be the River Hawks 17th appearance at the Hockey East Tournament Championship Weekend and the fourth consecutive year that they have played in the semifinals. The River Hawks are trying to become just the fourth team to earn a spot in the Championship Game in at least four straight seasons.
