River Hawks downed by No. 9 Yale, 17-7, in home opener

LOWELL, Mass. --
The UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team was defeated by No. 9 ranked Yale, 17-7, in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon in the River Hawks' home opener at Cushing Field Complex.

UMass Lowell drops to 0-2 overall on the season, while the Bulldogs picked up the win in their season opener.

Yale jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on two goals by Ben Reeves at 14:05 and 10:37. Junior midfielder Sam Klingsporn (Aloha, Ore.) notched his fifth goal of the season at 7:02 and then the Bulldogs rattled off three straight goals to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Reeves finished the game with seven points (4g,3a).

Klingsporn opened the scoring in the second quarter for his sixth of the year to make it a 5-2 game with 13:54 left in the quarter. Yale then scored another two goals to go into the locker room at halftime up 7-2.

Yale went on to score nine third-quarter goals, but UMass Lowell ended strong with five goals in the final quarter on goals by Jared Zaniewski (Sandwich, Mass.), Martin Winter (Lake Oswego, Ore.), Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.), Klingsporn and Matthew Balter (West Sand Lake, N.Y.). Klingsporn finished the day with a team-high three goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) stopped nine shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Junior Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.) came in for the final 15 minutes making four saves and allowing one goal. Phil Huffard started the game for Yale and made one save, as he picked up the win and Hoyt Crance came in in relief for the final 15 minutes making four saves and allowing five goals.

Freshman Michael Rouskas (Montville, N.J.) won eight of 20 faceoffs on the day to lead the River Hawks.

Yale outshot the River Hawks, 47-20, for the game, but UMass Lowell owned a 12-9 edge in the final quarter.

The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, February 27th at Siena College at 1 p.m.
