BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UMass Lowell (0-5) women's basketball team were defeated by the Indiana Hoosiers (4-1), 79-45, on Wednesday afternoon.

"I thought the team came out in the second half and was able to execute what we talked about," commented Head Coach Jenerrie Harris. "It was nice to see us able to get into our offenses easier than we were in the first half. Indiana's a great team, they play well and move the ball. It was nice to be able to go up against a team that is as talented as they are."

Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) gave the River Hawks a 2-0 lead just 27 seconds into the contest, and Katherine Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind.) connected on a jumper to bring the visitors even at 4-4. Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) added a bucket to send UMass Lowell into the second period trailing 27-8.

Gibbs added two quick baskets in the second as she led the River Hawks at the half with six points. Smith notched her second bucket of the game with a jumper that rattled around the rim and fell as the buzzer sounded to end the first half.

Behind 10 first-half points from Amanda Cahill, the Hoosiers took a 44-18 advantage into the final 20 minutes of play.

For the third time in the contest, Gibbs scored the first points of a quarter and recorded her 24th career double-digit scoring game in the third period. The junior finished with team-high 14 points.

Smith finished the night with a season-high nine points and grabbed six boards to lead UMass Lowell's rebounding effort.

Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) converted the lone River Hawk three-pointer and contributed eight points, and in front of over 150 family & friends, Shackelford scored four points.

The Hoosiers were paced by a trio of scorers in double figures, including a game-high 18 points from Alexis Gassion, who also netted her 1,000th career point. Amanda Cahill and Tyra Buss rounded out the trio with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

UMass Lowell is back in action on November 26 with a contest at Boston University, tip is set for 2 p.m.
