BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time all season, the UMass Lowell (0-6) women's basketball team had three players in double figures, but it was not enough as Boston University (1-4) topped the visitors, 66-56, on Saturday afternoon.
Â
In her first career start, freshman
Megan Hendrick (Alexandria, Va.) tied her career high with 15 points, while classmate
Markayla Sherman (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a career-high 12.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) recorded her eighth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and
Oda Shackelford (Edinburgh, Ind.) tied her personal best with eight points.
"I thought that Markayla, Oda and Amanda did a great job coming off the bench and following the scouting to give us something that we didn't have out of the floor," commented Head Coach
Jenerrie Harris. "We needed some offense and both Markayla and Oda provided that, and when we needed dfense Amanda was able to do a good job."Â
Trailing 8-2 with 2:25 left in the first quarter, Sherman sparked a 10-0 run, scoring five points, her first collegiate buckets.
Amanda Ortiz (Newton, Mass.) converted a conventional three-point play to give the River Hawks a 10-8 lead with 63 seconds left in the first.
Â
Continuing their first quarter run into the second, the Terriers went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. Gibbs ended the run with a layup to cut the deficit to 17-12 with 5:16 remaining in the first half. The bucket sparked a 6-0 run for the River Hawks, with Hendrick and
Asia Mitchell-Owens (Roxbury, Mass.) bringing UMass Lowell within 17-16.
Â
BU took back momentum with an 8-0 spurt to enter the intermission with a 25-16 lead, and extended the advantage to 31-16 with 8:11 on the clock in the third. Forty seconds later, Sherman ended the scoreless drought with a three-point play to get the River Hawks within 31-19.
Â
The hosts built their largest lead of the contest at 40-21 with 3:39 left in the third, before UMass Lowell ended the period on an 11-4 run to enter the fourth trailing 44-32.
Kayla Gibbs (Teaneck, N.J.) and Shackelford led the charge combining for 10 points during the run, scoring six and four, respectively.
Â
Shackelford started the fourth with another basket to bring the River Hawks within 10, but once again the Terriers countered and led 49-34 with 7:44 left in regulation. Hendrick scored her final eight points in the last 82 seconds trying to spark a comeback, but the hosts connected on their free throws to ice the contest.
