No. 5 River Hawks defeated at Maine, 5-2

LOWELL, Mass. --
The No. 5 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team fell at Maine, 5-2, on Friday night in Hockey East play at Alfond Arena. 

With the loss, the River Hawks fall to 6-3-2 overall (2-1-0 HEA), while Maine improves to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in Hockey East contests. 

Blaine Byron didn't take long to get Maine on the scoreboard with his fourth of the season just 37 seconds into the game. Junior foward Gage Hough (Omaha, Neb.) tied the game at 1-1 for the River Hawks at 7:20 for his second goal of the season. Byron scored another just 24 seconds later to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead. Junior forward John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) evened the game at 2-2 with just 38.8 seconds left in the opening period. The River Hawks held a 15-11 shot advantage in the first frame.

Rob Michel scored a shorthanded goal for the Black Bears to give them a 3-2 lead through two periods. 

Maine added two goals in the third on tallies by Cam Brown (9:27) and Byron with a shorthanded empty-netter for the hat trick at 18:16. 

Freshman goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) registered 22 saves in his eighth collegiate start, while Rob McGovern totaled 31 saves in his fourth win of the year. UMass Lowell finished the night a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. 

The River Hawks finish the two-game series with Maine on Sunday, November 13th. Game time from Tsongas Center is 3 p.m.
