No. 19 River Hawks Host UAlbany in Battle for First Place

LOWELL, Mass. – The No. 19 UMass Lowell (11-1-2, 3-1-1) men's soccer team hosts the UAlbany Great Danes (9-4-2, 3-1-1) in a battle of the conference's top teams on Saturday night, in the second to last game of the season. 

River Hawk Rewind
After trailing 2-0 in the 73rd minute at Boston College, the River Hawks scored three goals in the final 27 minutes, including the game-winning goal in the 100th minute to knock off the Eagles for the squad's first win over an ACC opponent in program history. Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) brought UMass Lowell within 2-1 in the 73rd minute, and just eight minutes later Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) knotted the score. The duo connected again in the extra period to complete the comeback as Fernandes registered his second assist of the night on Abramovic's winner. Sophomore Zach Rowell (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded his first River Hawk win in his first start, and Joe Kellett (Norfolk, Mass.) tallied a helper on the game-winning tally. 
 
Leading the Flock
Fernandes and Abramovic lead the team with a nine goals apiece, both career highs, and sit in third among the America East ranks. Abramovic adds a team-high seven assists for 25 points, while Fernandes has chipped in a career-high five assists for 23 points. Carlos Ruiz (East Boston, Mass.) is third with nine points (3g, 3a), and Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) is third on the squad with six assists. Ivan Blaskic (Zagreb, Croatia) has one tally and two assists so far in his first season as a River Hawk. In net, junior Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) has allowed eight goals on 118 shots, recording 37 saves and continues to lead the conference with a 0.60 goals against average and .822 save percentage.

Dymanic Duo
Fernandes and Abramovic became the first pair of River Hawks with 20 or more points in a season since 2012. With one more goal each, they would also become the first duo to have 10 goals in season since 2003. 
 
Scouting UAlbany
The Great Danes have been in a tie with the River Hawks atop the standings since the beginning of conference play, however they fell to Stony Brook, 2-1, on Oct. 22 in their last America East contest. UAlbany bounced back for a 3-0 non-conference win at Hartwick on Oct. 25. Afonso Pinheiro leads the team with his nine goals and 20 points, while Nico Solabarreita has registered a team-high six assists. Danny Vitiello leads the way between the pipes with a 1.05 GAA and a .755 save percentage in his six wins. 
 
Series History
UMass Lowell is 1-6 all-time against UAlbany, with the lone win coming in 2014 in a 1-0 shutout. The Great Danes topped the River Hawks by a 2-1 score in last season's meeting.

Home Sweet Home
The River Hawks sit at 4-0-2 at Cushing Field this season and have posted a 13-7-3 home record since 2014.
 
Road Warriors
UMass Lowell has been of the best road teams in the country this season, posting a 7-1 mark in games away from Cushing Field. The seven wins is the most on the road since the 2012 team won six.

Election Season
The River Hawks remained in the Top 20 in the NSCAA DI National Poll and College Soccer News Top 30 polls, entering the week's action at number 19 and 20, respectively. UMass Lowell has been ranked in the NSCAA Poll for six straight weeks and has been the top-ranked team in the East for seven weeks. The program cracked the top 10 in the RPI for the third-straight week, entering the week at No. 9. 

Playing From Ahead
Before succumbing the first goal against Brown, UMass Lowell had only trailed for 1:47 this season, coming in the first game of the season at Northeastern. From Ben Waithe's (Plymouth, Mass.) game tying goal, the River Hawks went 452 consecutive minutes without trailing. 

Saving Space in the Records
Kroll now sits third all-time with 25 career wins and in fourth with 17 career blank sheets. With 1190:26 of total playing time this season, he has moved into sixth all-time with 4,400:28 minutes in a River Hawk uniform.

And That Was Talking Soccer
Abramovic's game-winning goal from Sept. 4 earned a spot on SportsCenter's Top 10 list at number 4. The tally appeared on Fox Soccer and took home the Top Drawer Soccer Goal of the Week.

Notables
Abramovic has posted three two-goal games this season and has registered multiple points in six contests .... Abramovic picked up his third Rookie of the Week award and was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week (10.10) ... Ruiz was named one of the 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award (10.7) ... Fernandes earned America East Player of the Week and College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors (9.12) ... Abramovic took consecutive America East Rookie of the Week awards (8.29-9.6) … with five wins this season, Figueroa has reached 51 wins during his coaching career at UMass Lowell.
