River Hawks and Vieira Down New Hampshire, 2-1

Box Score (PDF) | Highlights | Post-Game Interview

LOWELL, Mass. –
Sophomore Katelyn Vieira (Warwick, R.I.) boasted a two goal performance as the River Hawks mounted a 2-1 come from behind win against New Hampshire (6-8-3, 3-4-1 AE) Sunday afternoon on Home Coming Weekend.

"I thought the performance by our girls was good," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "The team is very young. We spent this week regrouping and looking at our formation, trying to put people in positions they would be successful. This is a great result to end conference play."

With the victory, UMass Lowell improves to 5-9-2 overall and 3-5-2 in America East action in the squad's final conference tilt of 2016. Had the squad been eligible for post season play, the win would have qualified the River Hawks for a spot in the America East tournament for the first time since the universities transition to Division I.

Vieira marked her first multi-goal game of 2016 and second of her career after netting a hat trick against Quinnipiac in 2015.

After a Wildcat turnover, sophomore Samantha Lee (Salem, Conn.) laced a long ball through to Vieira just outside the top of the box. Shortly after collecting the pass, Vieira beat the opposing goalkeeper to her left to propel her team to a final 2-1 victory.

The equalizer came in the second half behind pass from junior Alex Guzman (Las Vegas, Nev.) who fed Vieira for the 1-1 score. Guzman's helper was her first of the year while Vieira picked up her third goal of the season.

New Hampshire's Brooke Murphy broke open the scoring with a tally top shelf in the 37th minute from 30 yards out.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded two saves in the win, while her counterparts combined for four on the night.

UMass Lowell closes out its 2016 campaign on Tuesday, November 1 with a non-conference tilt against Dartmouth. The River Hawks will honor their senior's with a special pregame ceremony as part of Senior Night.
