DURHAM, N.H. --Â
Stanley Alves (Framingham, Mass.) netted his second goal of the season in the 88th minute, but the No. 14 UMass Lowell (10-1-2, 3-1-1) men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season, falling 2-1 to the New Hampshire Wildcats (11-4-0, 3-2-0) on Sunday evening.
"It's always dropping points in the conference," commented Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "I thought we could have a better job controlling the game, but we have to give credit to UNH, as they are an organized team who work hard and make it difficult for 90 minutes."
Â
The Wildcats took a 1-0 advantage into the first half following Duff Thomson's tally in the 37th minute. In the 79th minute, Chris Wingate doubled the buffer on a penalty kick conversion.
Â
Alves gave the River Hawks a chance in the final minutes when he tipped in a one-timer from
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) off a pass from
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde).Â
Â
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) recorded three stops in the first half, before
Zach Rowell (Haverhill, Mass.) made his UMass Lowell debut between the pipes in the second 45 minutes and made one stop.
Â
The visitors outshot the Wildcats 14-12 after an 11-3 edge in the second half, and held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Jovanovski and
Ivan Blaskic (Zagreb, Croatia) led the River Hawks with four shots and two on target apiece.
Â
UMass Lowell plays its final road game on the season at Boston College on October 25. The contest will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Plus/ESPN 3.Â
