CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Trailing 2-0 with 17 minutes to play, the No. 19 UMass Lowell (11-1-2) men's soccer team battled back for three goals in 27 minutes to knock off Boston College (6-7-2), 3-2, in overtime on Tuesday afternoon.
Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) scored twice, including the game-winning goal, for his third multi-goal and sixth multi-point contests of the season. The redshirt-freshman secured the win in the 100th minute on a sideways volley with the outside of his foot.
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) headed the ball in the direction of Abramovic off a throw-in from
Joe Kellett (Norfolk, Mass.). The win was the first for the River Hawks against BC in the all-time series, and marked the program's first victory against an ACC opponent.
"It was a great response by the guys after going down 2-0," commented Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "Being down two in any game can be difficult but this team has shown a lot throughout the season. Mental toughness is a huge key and they sure showed it today to win it in overtime, as well as the patience they showed to fight back, it was a deserving win."
The Zagreb, Croatia native knotted up the game at 2-2 in the 82nd minute after Fernandes gathered a cross in the box and the loose ball got through to Abramovic and beat the keeper on a one-on-one opportunity.
Nine minutes earlier, Fernandes scored his ninth goal of the season in the 73rd minute to trim the Eagles' lead to 2-1.
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia) threaded the needle with a pass through a pair of defenders to the senior. Fernandes took one touch and rifled the ball past the sprawling Boston College goalkeeper.
In the opening minutes of the overtime period, the hosts had a tremendous opportunity to win the game, but before the attacker could get a shot off in the box,
Carlos Ruiz (East Boston, Mass.) timed a perfect tackle to avoid a penalty kick and dispossess the Eagle.
Boston College struck first on a perfectly placed header by Maximillian Schulze-Geisthovel in the 15th minute. A little more than 10 minutes later UMass Lowell had a couple chances but
Jakov Basic (Zagreb, Croatia) had his 20-yard free kick saved at the last moment, and Cedric Saladin was able to corral a header from
Alejandro Osorio (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
The hosts doubled the buffer in the 38th minute on a deflected shot by Callum Johnson. Basic had two more chances in the final minutes, with another free kick just going wide of the left post in the 44th minute.
Sophomore
Zach Rowell (Haverhill, Mass.) made three saves in his first career start for the River Hawks to pick up this first collegiate win. The two assists marked the second time this season that Fernandes recorded two helpers in a game.
UMass Lowell is back at home on Saturday, October 29 against UAlbany at 7 p.m. The two teams are currently tied atop the America East standings at 3-1-1.
