STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Ivan Abramovic's free kick strike in the 23rd minute was all the No. 18 UMass Lowell (10-0-2, 3-0-1) men's soccer team needed to remain unbeaten after a 1-0 win at Stony Brook (7-4-2, 2-2-2) on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After a Stony Brook handball at the top of the box, Abramovic stepped up and sent a rocket into the upper left corner that eluded the wall and froze the keeper for the lead. The victory marks the third time that the River Hawks have won 10 games in a season under Head CoachÂ
Christian Figueroa, and the first since 2012. UMass Lowell won its third straight against the Seawolves, and improved to 6-1-1 all-time.Â
Â
"Our guys showed a lot of character today playing on the road against a very tough Stony Brook team," commented Figueroa. "I thought we defended very well when we needed to, and created very good opportunities out there. We were a bit unlucky to not score a second goal, but keeping the shutout is something we are very proud of."
Â
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) made three second-half stops to pick up his 25th career victory to move into sole possession of third all-time, as well as his 17th blank sheet as a River Hawk. The junior's biggest save came in the 86th minute, as Martieon Watson reached around a defender and poked a shot that Kroll had to make a split second reaction on.
Â
The River Hawks had three opportunities to extend their lead in the second half, but Tom McMahon stopped the trio to keep it a one-goal buffer. Stony Brook outshot UMass Lowell 12-10, and behind 11 corners in the second frame ended the game with a 15-0 advantage.
Â
Abramovic and
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) led the way with a game-high four shots apiece, and Abramovic had a game-high two shots on target.
