LOWELL, Mass. – The No. 8 UMass Lowell Hockey team scored three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 victory against No. 3 Providence College in Hockey East Action on Saturday night in front of 6,308 fans at the Tsongas Arena.
 
"It was a good two points, I thought that the urgency was there throughout the 60 minutes tonight, and I am very proud of the team," said Head Coach Norm Bazin.
 
Junior defenseman Michael Kapla (Eau Claire, Wis.) notched his second game-winner and fourth goal of the season, at 11:00 minutes in the third period, after picking up his own rebound and tapping it into the net.
 
In a scoreless first period, shots were evenly traded, as both squads fired nine shots apiece at their opposing goals. The River Hawks had the edge in special teams, as they found themselves in two power plays opportunities but could not convert on either man up advantage.
 
The Friars struck first, after senior forward Brandon Tanev deflected a pass from the blue line and past senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) to find the back of the net in the second period.
 
With under one minute to play in the second period, sophomore forward Jake Kamrass (Atlanta, Ga.) blasted a shot from just inside the blue line and into the top right corner of the net, knotting the score 1-1. Kamrass tallied his first goal of the season, while Kapla and senior forward Adam Chapie (Oxford, Mich.) picked up the assists.
 
With five minutes left in regulation, freshman forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) tacked on an insurance goal to help give the River Hawks a  3-1 lead to close out the remainder of the game.
 
Boyle racked up 20 saves in the outing, on his way to picking up his 15th win this year.
 
UMass Lowell outshot Providence 34-21, with a 16-5 shot advantage in the third period. Dmowski and Dylan Zink (Madison, Wis.) led the team with a game-high five shots in the contest.
 
Saturday's contest marked the 110th meeting between the River Hawks and the Friars. Though UMass Lowell won the game, Providence continues to hold a slight 46-54-11 lead in the all-time series. The River Hawks are back in action Friday, Jan. 29, as UMass Lowell hosts Arizona State for a 7 p.m. tilt in game one, of a two-game home series.
