Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 11 River Hawks earn 4-1 road win at UMass in Hockey East play

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 11 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team earned a 4-1 road win at Massachusetts on Friday night in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.

With the victory, UMass Lowell improves to 13-4-4 overall and 8-2-3 in league play. UMass drops to 7-11-4 with the loss (2-6-4 HEA).

UMass Lowell junior defenseman Dylan Zink (Madison, Wis.) capped off the scoring in the game with 7:39 left in third period with a wrist shot on the power play for his sixth goal of the year. Shane Walsh scored UMass' lone goal at 9:01 of the third for his 15th goal of the season.  

Sophomore forward Gage Hough (Omaha, Neb.) scored his second career goal right in front of the UMass net at 8:47 in the second period to help extend the UMass Lowell lead to 3-0.

The River Hawks struck early on in the opening period, as senior forward Adam Chapie's (Oxford, Mich.) 10th goal of the season at 2:44. Junior co-captain Michael Kapla (Eau Claire, Wis.) extended UMass Lowell's lead to 2-0 on the power play with a wrister from the point at 13:21 for his third tally of the year. The River Hawks outshot the Minutemen, 10-2 in the first period. Sophomore forward John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) doubled his point total this season with two assists in the period.

Senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) stopped 17 shots in his 13th win of the season, which included 10 second period saves. UMass' Nic Renyard stopped 33 shots in the losing effort for the Minutemen, which included 15 saves in the third period.

The River Hawks outshot UMass, 37-18 for the game, including a 10-2 edge in the first period and a 16-6 advantage in the third period. UMass Lowell went 2-for-5 on the power play, while River Hawk penalty was a perfect 2-for-2.

UMass Lowell returns to action the series finale vs. Massachusetts on Saturday, January 16th. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7 p.m.
Tickets for all River Hawks home hockey games are on sale now. Game tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (65 ) and military, and $12 and children (12 and under). UMass Lowell students receive free admission by scanning their ID as part of the "River Hawk Rewards" campaign. Tickets can be purchased at the Tsongas Center Box Office, which is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. during the week.
