LOWELL, Mass. – After splitting the first two games of the season, the UMass Lowell men's soccer team travels to Brooklyn, N.Y. for the Brooklyn Bridge Cup. The River Hawks take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m., and LIU Brooklyn at 1 p.m. on Sept. 6.
Looking at UMass LowellThe River Hawks avenged their 2014 season-opening defeat at Monmouth, by defeating the Hawks, 1-0, on August 28. Redshirt-freshman
Paul Beatty (Halifax, Mass.) scored his first career goal in the 37th minute. Reigning America East Co-Rookie of the Week
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) made three saves for his sixth career shutout. UMass Lowell suffered its first defeat of the 2015 campaign at the hands of the Utah Valley Wolverines, 2-0, on Aug. 30.
Scouting St. Francis BrooklynIn their season opener, the Terriers played to 0-0 draw with the UConn Huskies. Senior goalkeeper Jack Binks made two saves for his first shutout of year, after recording 10 last season. The St. Francis offense returns leading scorer John Makaya, who notched eight goals and one assist for 17 points in 2014. In last season's meeting at the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Windjammer Classic, the River Hawks defeated the Terriers, 3-1, with goals from
Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde),
Carlos Ruiz (East Boston, Mass.) and
Homero Morais.
Head Coach Christian Figueroa on St. Francis"I think St. Francis is a tough team, they just had a good result against UConn, had a good game plan and executed it well. As an NCAA team last year, they're used to winning. I know that we had a good result against them last year, but that was last year and our guys understand that that means nothing. They went on a run after we played them and made it to the tournament, so they're used to finding ways to win."Scouting LIU BrooklynThe Blackbirds split their opening weekend, defeating Presbyterian, 3-1, and coming up short to UNC Asheville, 2-1. LIU will host St. Bonaventure in its first game of the Brooklyn Bridge Cup. Rasmus Hansen leads the offense so far with two goals, one assist, and three shots on goal. Romario Guscott has added a pair of tallies for the team. In net, Logan Keys and Cole Palmer have each made one start, with Keys earning the win with one save. Palmer has made four saves in the young season.
Head Coach Christian Figueroa on LIU"LIU is a team that we haven't played before and they'll be a tough team as well. We have to go to their place and deal with their home field advantage. We have to make sure we're preparing well for them this week and carry it into the weekend.
Series HistoryThe River Hawks are 1-0 against St. Francis Brooklyn with the 3-1 victory last year. This will be the first ever matchup between UMass Lowell and LIU Brooklyn.
NotablesLast Friday's win against Monmouth was the first season-opening win for the River Hawks in the Division I era.
