PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) and sophomore Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) scored second-half goals to lead the UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-1) to a 2-1 victory at Brown (2-2) on Sunday afternoon.

"Today was a great game," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "It was certainly a battle for 70 minutes, but we've figured out that every game is going to be a battle for us. I thought we played good hockey in the first half, and really came out in the second half and took the game into our control."

Huk is now tied for first on the team with three goals so far this season. Junior Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Queensland, Australia) and senior Sophie Watt (Sawtell, Australia) each logged an assist on the day. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.) tallied three saves in the outing, while senior back Marzana Fiedtkou (Georgetown, Guyana) added the team's first defensive save of the year.

In the early minutes of an evenly-matched first half that saw each side register eight shots, the Bears' Hannah Rogers broke away from the pack and had a one-on-one opportunity against Federico, but the keeper came charging out of the cage to make a great diving save.

The River Hawks then threatened on a corner with 24:08 remaining in the first half, although the initial shot by senior Jessica Walsh (North Easton, Mass.) and a pair of follow-up attempts by Cowderoy were cleared out of the circle.

The fast-paced, back-and-forth action continued for the remainder of the half with both sides fighting aggressively for control. Federico came up big again with a stick save on another shot by Rogers with just under 17 minutes to go in the first. In the last five minutes of the period, UMass Lowell had a 3-on-1 attack heading into the circle, but back-to-back attempts by Doiron were cleared away.

Coming out of the break, the squads continued to battle for an upper hand. Senior Jenna Freitas (Manchester, N.H.) fired a slap shot from the middle of the circle that sailed just wide of the cage less than eight minutes into the second half.

The River Hawks broke the game open with 16:02 left to play, as Huk was able to redirect a pass from Cowderoy on goal, giving UMass Lowell a 1-0 advantage. The visitors then added to their lead less than four minutes later when Watt dished the ball into traffic and Doiron gained control for a sweeping shot that found the back of the cage.

Ellie Seid got the Bears on the board, cutting the difference to just one with 11:04 remaining in the outing. However, the River Hawks maintained the momentum and the lead in the final minutes to secure the 2-1 outcome.

Sunday's contest marked just the second meeting ever between UMass Lowell and Brown, as the all-time series is now tied, 1-1. The River Hawks will play just one game next week, traveling to Hofstra for a 3 p.m. contest on Friday, September 18.
