Harring InterviewALBANY, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball teams bats put runs up in each of the first four innings, while four pitchers combined for a 5-0 shutout victory in the series finale at Albany.
Â
The River Hawks (14-23, 10-7) got four scoreless innings from starter
Nick Kuzia (Seymour, Conn.) and capitalized on four errors by the Great Danes (13-22, 6-8) to take two of the three game series at Varsity Field. Kuzia gave up one hit and struck out a pair while
Steve Xirinachs (San Diego, Calif.) and
Tim Fallon (Huntingtown, Md.) each struck out three. Sophomore
Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) came on to throw a scoreless ninth.
Â
The visiting River Hawks wasted no time against UAlbany starter Joe Romero, as
Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a balk. He would come home on a sacrifice fly to center from the games second batter,
Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.).
Â
The leadoff hitter reached for the River Hawks four times in four innings.
Â
Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.) trotted to first in the second inning after getting hit by Romero and came around to score on a sacrifice bunt down the first base line from
Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.). Catcher
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) added the River Hawks second run of the inning, scoring on an error by the Great Danes second baseman.
Â
Strom's single to left scored
Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) in the third before Consolmagno fourth inning RBI scored Barry.
Â
The offensive output was more than enough for the River Hawks starter and bullpen who surrendered just four hits while striking out nine.
Â
After giving up a first inning single, Kuzia found his rhythm and retired the next 10 batters before facing his first test. The freshman gave up back-to-back walks before a miscue by the River Hawks defense loaded the bases for Adam Mund who hit a routine fly out to center to end the inning.
Â
The club will have a five-day break until hosting Stony Brook at LeLacheur Park in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
