Game 2 (PDF)ALBANY, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team split a twin bill against Albany on Saturday, taking the opener 11-4, before having the script flipped in a 13-2 loss at Varsity Field in the second game.

In the opener, freshman
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) struck out a season-high seven to pick up his second straight win, and improve to 2-1. Ryan got help from senior
Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) who had three RBI to lead the River Hawks (13-23, 9-7) while three more knocked in two RBI each. The Great Danes (13-21, 6-7) scored 10 runs off starter
Kevin Veilleux (Manchester, N.H.) through three innings en route to the game two victory.

The River Hawks scored on a double from
Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) in the first and single from
Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) in the second to take a 2-1 lead. After failing to score a run in the third, the River Hawks scored a run in the fourth through six, before a five-run seventh.

Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) and
Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) singled in a run each before the visiting River Hawks plated another run when DeGroot drew a walk with the bases loaded. Ricoy delivered a two RBI single to left to wrap up the scoring in the frame.

Also knocking in two RBI for the visiting River Hawks in the opener was
Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) and
Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.).

The Great Danes bounced back in the second game by scoring five in the first and capitalizing on a miscue by Sanchez that brought in two runs. A single through the right side plated two more.

UAlbany added four more runs on three hits in the second inning off Veilleux.

The River Hawks scored on a single to left from DeGroot before adding another run in the fifth from Mendick.

The teams will square off in the series finale tomorrow at noon.
