HighlightsLOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference tilt against Rhode Island, 14-2, at LeLacheur Park on Wednesday night.
The Rams (18-18-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two RBI single by Jordan Powell, scoring Nick DeRegis and Mike Corin.
UMass Lowell (12-22) got one run back in the bottom of the inning when
Brice Erickson (Leominster, Mass.) doubled home
Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) with two outs. Blaise Whitman got out of a two-out bases loaded jam with one of his six strikeouts.
Rhode Island extended its lead with thee runs in the top of the fourth with
Jeffrey Peterson III (Windham, N.H.) on the mound. With one out, Chase Livingston reached on a fielder's choice to drive in DeRegis. Livingston and Powell later scored in the inning on a single off the bat of Tim Caputo.
In the fourth, the hosts threatened with the bases loaded once again, but Whitman got the final two outs by way of the strikeout.
Trailing 8-1 in the fifth, Strom doubled the right field line scoring
Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.), who led off the inning with a double to right.
The Rams added two runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 12-2 lead. Martin Taveras hit a home run over the right field wall to extend the lead to 14-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth. Â
Whitman picked up his fourth win of the season, and Peterson was handed his fourth loss.
The River Hawks travel to UAlbany for a three-game series this weekend. Saturday, May 2 will feature a doubleheader starting at noon.
