The club won't get comfortable as they travel to UAlbany to play three at Varsity Field over the weekend. Wednesday's game against the Rams will also be the first of two planned youth day's at LeLacheur and is highlighted by a team poster giveaway and a postgame autograph session on the field.
ADAM KEENAN DAY:Keenan was 20 years of age when he tragically passed away due to Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) while playing with the Seacoast Mavericks of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League in June of 2011. A nearby graduate of Lowell High, Keenan played his sophomore season with the River Hawks in 2011 after transferring from Franklin Pierce University. Since his passing, Keenan's number 15 jersey has been left unused to honor his memory.
YOUTH DAY:There will be free admission for all youth baseball teams and families who wish to attend and all youth baseball leagues are welcomed to join! Gameday activities will include an on field parade prior to the national anthem, free ice cream for the first 100 players/parents, a 2015 team poster giveaway, baseball bingo and other in-game promotions & raffles.
LAST TIME OUT:The River Hawks pitchers were in complete control over the weekend and dominated the series, sweeping a three-game set at Hartford. Freshman
Andrew Ryan and senior
Geoff DeGroot allowed one combined run, sandwiching complete games around
Kevin Veilleux's strong outing, as he too was one strike away from going the distance. Ryan dealt a shutout of the Hawks in a 3-0 final while DeGroot struck out four for the third straight game and earned a 3-1 decision. With two strikes, two outs and a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks nine-hitter took Veilleux deep to force extra's.
Kelly Rooney knocked in the go-ahead run in the ninth before
Christian Lavoie struck out the final batter with a runner on third for a 5-4 victory.
SERIES VS. RHODE ISLAND:The River Hawks and Rams clashed earlier this season in Kingston, R.I. with the home team claiming an 8-1 victory at Bill Beck Field. Third baseman
Matthew Sanchez tripled in the River Hawks lone run in the sixth to cut the deficit to two, but URI answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take control.
SERIES VS. ALBANY:The Great Dane took two-of-three from the River Hawks last season at Varsity Field. Albany rallied with a three-run ninth to take the series opener, 8-7, before the River Hawks bounced back with an emphatic 11-4 win in the nightcap.
Ian Strom led the offensive charge with three RBI while
Luke Reynolds and Sanchez each added two RBI. A wild pitch in the eighth inning of the rubber game cost the River Hawks a 3-2 decision despite two RBI from
Danny Mendick.
AMERICA EAST HONORS:Following their strong outings over the weekend, Ryan and DeGroot were named the AE Rookie of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Ryan's decision also marked his first win at UMass Lowell.
SOARING IN THE AE STANDINGS:The River Hawks entered last weekend with a 5-6 record in league play and sat fourth in the standings. After pulling the brooms out on Hartford, the River Hawks catapulted themselves to second in the standings behind Stony Brook. The River Hawks are currently riding a five-game win streak in league play.
ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END:Mendick's streaks of 14 straight games with a hit and 15 in row reaching base came to an end in the frontend of Saturday's doubleheader at Hartford. The hitting streak fell one shy of
Geoff DeGroot in 2013, whom strung together a stretch of 15 consecutive games.
