LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (13–18, 5–7 America East) finishes a stretch of 12 consecutive home games at Edward A. LeLacheur Park on Tuesday against Stonehill (13–17), before traveling to UMBC (16–14, 5–4 AE) for a weekend conference series.
LAST TIME OUT
Moving deeper into the season, the River Hawks put together a competitive weekend, securing a 2–1 series victory over NJIT. UMass Lowell is now tied for fifth in the America East alongside UAlbany at 5–7.
The River Hawks dominated in game one, 11–2, against NJIT, as UMass Lowell totaled 12 hits in the game, with seven different River Hawks recording at least one RBI and seven scoring at least one run. Freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.) put together a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while graduate student Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, and graduate student Nicholas Solorzano (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) posted two hits in the game with two RBI and a run. Producing another commanding outing on the mound, junior Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) collected his second victory of the season, pitching 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed. Senior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) came in the game in relief, going 1.2 innings with four strikeouts and no hits or runs. Also out of the pen, sophomore Nolan Geisler (Bayonne, N.J.) and graduate student Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) each went an inning, both leaving the opposition scoreless.
In game two versus the Highlanders, UMass Lowell staged a late comeback after evening the score in the eighth inning with an RBI groundout and an RBI on a sac bunt, later ending the contest in the tenth with a thrilling finish from a walk-off hit by Masse for a 4–3 win and the series victory. Junior Rowan Masse (Manchester, Conn.) had a standout day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a walk-off hit, while also recording two runs and an RBI. Senior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI, as Burgos added a hit and a run in the game. On the bump to start, senior Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.) pitched 6.1 innings with four strikeouts. Sophomores Jake LeFrancois (Worcester, Mass.) and Geisler each pitched in two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs, as LeFrancois tossed a strikeout and Geisler struck out three batters and earned his third victory of the season.
The River Hawks made a late push in the final game against NJIT, but fell, 14–11, to close the series. Burgos executed well at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, as redshirt-sophomore Sean O'Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) posted three hits in his six at-bats with three runs in the contest. On the mound, graduate student Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 3.2 innings in relief, tossing four strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Moving forward through the conference season, O'Leary still ranks first on the team in batting average (.299), and leads in on-base plus slugging percentage at .837. O'Leary is also tied for first in triples with Chance and Burgos at one each, while Solorzano ranks first for home runs with four. Chance leads the team overall in hits (36) and stolen bases (7), while Burgos sits in first for slugging percentage at .458. Masse still leads the team in walks (21) and ranks first for on-base percentage (.411), while also tying for first on the team in runs scored (31) with O'Leary. Senior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) ranks first on the team for runs batted in with 27, and has hit the most doubles on the team (11).
Mucciarone still leads the team in earned run average (4.02), and holds a team-low in WHIP at 1.36. Graduate student Will Melby Jr. (Munster, Ind.), Geisler, and LeFrancois are all tied for the most wins on the team with three. Martinez remains ranked first on the team for saves with three. Mucciarone has also pitched in the most innings (47.0) on the team, while Foley has tossed the most strikeouts on the team at 46.
A NEW UML DI PROGRAM CAREER DOUBLES LEADER
On Wednesday, March 25, Carlos Martinez stepped to the plate for his second at-bat against Northeastern and drove a double to right field. The double was his 44th as a River Hawk, making the outfielder UMass Lowell Baseball's Division I career leader in doubles.
COMPLETE GAME PERFORMANCE BY MUCCIARONE
On Friday, March 27, Alfred Mucciarone made his sixth start of the season and dominated the Maine Black Bears, throwing a complete game in a 10–1 UMass Lowell victory. The junior right-hander pitched all nine innings, striking out seven, allowing four hits, and giving up zero walks and no earned runs. The River Hawks' last complete game came on April 26, 2024, when Michael Simes threw all nine innings in a 2–0 win over UMBC.

SCOUTING STONEHILL
Stonehill enters this week after previously earning a 15–8 victory against FDU on Sunday, as the Skyhawks now hold a 13–17 overall record. Offensively for Stonehill, graduate student Sam Perks leads the team overall in hits with 34, and owns a .315 batting average, while also registering 28 runs scored, 13 RBI, and six doubles. Also making an impact at the plate, junior Nathan Kearney has posted a .309 batting average with 30 hits, 24 RBI, 19 runs scored, and six doubles on the season. The team's primary pitcher is graduate student Ryan Douglas who owns a 5.26 earned run average, pitching 39.1 innings with 26 strikeouts and holds a 2–3 record on the mound this season.
SCOUTING UMBC
UMBC comes into this week after falling in all three games of the conference series against Binghamton, dropping the final game 16–5 on Sunday. The Retrievers now sit at a 16–14 overall record with a 5–4 mark in America East action. UMBC is currently tied for third in the conference with Maine, while the River Hawks are tied for fifth at 5–7. Junior Kyle Eddington leads the team overall in batting average at .341, while also posting 31 hits, 19 runs scored, 19 RBI, and three doubles. Also effective at the plate for the Retrievers, senior Ehi Okojie has tallied 35 hits with a .292 batting average, while also recording 30 RBI, 28 runs scored, 11 doubles and seven home runs. Out of the bullpen for UMBC, junior Zach Robinson holds a team-best earned run average at 2.91 with a 5–1 record in eight appearances on the season, while also leading in innings pitched (46.1) and strikeouts (30). Another key pitcher for the Retrievers is graduate student Brady LeJeune-DeAcutis who has tossed 38.1 innings with 23 strikeouts in eight appearances, holding a 3.52 earned run average this season.
